TheTanoch Empire is one of the new factions in Homeworld Mobile. They are a major faction in the Nimbus Galaxy, holding a vast amount of territory in the galactic west. They know of the Vaygr's presence in the galaxy and are at war with the Yaot.

Overview[]

The Tanoch are a humanoid race, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Hiigarans despite coming from different galaxies. They originate from a world called Tanochet, located in the Tanochetlan system, deep within Tanoch territory. The Tanoch control a vast Interstellar Empire, controlling a total of 44 star systems in the western quadrant of Nimbus Galaxy. The Tanoch are also home to the Chicuat and Tecuban people

Culture[]

The Tanoch are a deeply religious people comprised of three sub-cultures: the Ruling Tanoch, the liberal Chicuat, and the downtrodden Tecuban. Regardless of affiliation, the entire race is bound by the faith of the Priest Class, and the emperor who is descended from the gods. The current emperor of the Tanoch is Cazoma, the young son of the previous emperor who died under "mysterious circumstances".

One such belief in Tanoch religion is that the Star Totek, considered a holy star, contains the dead spirit of one of their ancient gods. As such, the site is a very popular destination for pilgrimage, and has numerous ships visiting it daily to pay their respects and pray. The Star is part of a constellation known among the Tanoch as the Eye of Xajaak - a creator deity whose hands are said to shape what is.

The Tanoch are also deferral to central authority figures and are sceptical of technology. The Tanoch Empire has repeatedly crushed dissidents and suppressed technological innovation in order to maintain their previous way of life.

Tanoch's Government[]

The current Emperor is Cazoma, He Who Speaks. The Hiigarans call the state religion, which otherwise has no specific name, as "makerism".

The ruler of the Tanoch Empire is an absolute monarch with power over millions and is assisted by a royal court of advisors and patrons. Chief in this retinue today is the supreme military leader Yaquica Yarem, and High Priest Itaca Taot. Among the many trappings of office the Emperor much posses, the most important among them is an ancient headset which is ceremonially grafted to the Emperor upon ascension to the throne. Gifted from the Makers themselves, it is said this crown makes the dreams of the wearer comes true. To date this has never been demonstrated.

Makerism[]

The state religion, Makerism (the Hiigaran's calls it that), worships the Progenitors as creators of all things in the physical world. The ruins of their interstellar civilization and all their works are said to be tools the gods used to create the universe, and are respected and venerated across the empire. Makerism has been growing in power over the past few generations. Today the state church now operates their own elite temple guards which guard sites of worship, extract taxes from the faithful, and generally enact the will of the chief priest in the name of their gods

Early History[]

Much of what is known about the Tanoch comes from in game loading screens. It is known that the current Tanoch Empire has existed for over 8000 years, although the history of the Tanoch as a people may be even older than that. In ancient times the Tanoch seem to have been a more violent and expansionist empire, as it is stated that many of the Cangacian pirates have ancestry tracing back to the refugees from the ancient Tanoch wars of conquest. It can thus be surmised that the Tanoch occupy a good portion of what was once Cangacian territory, forcing them into exile and their current nomadic lifestyle. The Cangacians never forgave them and continue to fight the Tanoch in modern times.

Large areas of Tanoch history are not preserved in the Imperial archives. The earliest definitive period in Tanoch History is the war which saw the ethnic Tanoch retake their homeworld from the Chicuat, starting centuries of persecution.

Through its history the Tanoch Empire has had several forms of government, but for the past three hundred years it has been commanded by the ruling family from Tanochet.

The Golden Centuries[]

By far the most documented period in Tanoch history are the Golden Centuries, wherein the Tanoch Empire executed a millennia of conquest. Hampered by primitive hyperdrive technology, they nevertheless made ruthless progress in bringing hundreds of worlds under their control. Minor civilizations they came across were brutally subjugated for incorporation into the empire or outright extermination. It ended only with the disappearance of Altozac the Radiant, after which the Empire stabilized at its current borders.

Meeting the Hiigarans[]

By the time the Hiigarans arrive to the Nimbus Galaxy in 9641 GSY the Tanoch have been fighting a centuries-long war with the Yaot Federation, which is centred around a group of Progenitor relics known as the "Five Pillars".

Detecting the arrival of new Hiigaran signatures in the galaxy, the Tanoch dispatch a patrol fleet to the Empty Quarter to investigate. While in the area, the captain of the patrol fleet, Tepin Papan, detects a Hiigaran fleet beset by Progenitor vessels at the debris site of Jolja and orders his ships to exit hyperspace and assist the Hiigarans. Tepin Papan is intrigued when he hears the Hiigarans refer to these ships "Progenitors", saying that the Tanoch have only encountered one other who calls what they know as the "Makers" by that name. Before leaving he invites the player's fleet to come visit Tanoch space and meet their Emperor when time allows.

Technology & Strategy[]

Tanochetlan 2

The Tanoch specialize in using kinetic weaponry and missiles. As such, they are a primary faction to raise reputation with ("Liaison") for players who wish to pursue a build centered around using these weapon types; they are also the only source of the blueprints for Large Weapon Parts of tiers II, III and IV. Aside from access to relevant blueprints, players with sufficient reputation will also get access to building Tanoch ships marked with a * in the list below.

Strategy[]

Tanoch ships are tanky brawlers: They have strong hulls and deal high hull damage, but are generally slow to move/turn and have medium to low weapon ranges. When facing larger Tanoch units like Capital Ships it is recommended to stay at maximum range and engage with long-range weapons like Ion Cannons and ranged abilities where possible.

A common strategy is to "kite" targeted units around and have the rest of your fleet focus the chasing ship(s) down with concentrated fire. A targeted Command Ship can also chip down at chasing Tanoch vessels with missiles, kinetic turrets or ion beams as it runs around (so long as it has a decently upgraded engine to outrun them with).

The Gold Fleet[]

This is a legend from the old days of the Tanoch known as a Ghost Story.

There is a legend among the Tanoch from the old days of conquest, about the Golden fleet and the Emperor of the time: Altozac the radiant. It is said that before he bombarded Taldonac VI, the wizard-king of that world put a curse on Altozac and his fleet. After the surface of Taldonac was turned to molten glass, the gold fleet jumped to hyperspace and never returned home.

Sightings of the gold fleet have been reported through the millennia, mostly from a distance. They never respond to hails and they don’t always appear on sensors, but they are reported as always moving towards Tanochet broadcasting strange signals. Attempts have been made to discern the fleet’s fate, but no concrete evidence has ever been found. The only thing that remains of the Gold Fleet are rumors and sightings across Tanoch space.

Trivia[]

  • This race was heavily inspired by the Aztecs, which reflects in their system names and planetary architecture as seen in one of the game's cutscenes and race lore.
