Background[]
The Standard Corvette is heavily armored and has a large fuel compartment allowing it to operate for extended periods without returning to a carrier for reload or repairs. These ships have two small turrets, one on each side just behind the cockpit giving the ship good coverage. The guns, however, are rather weak even for a corvette, and the Kushan and Taiidan Heavy Corvettes had far superior firepower. This may have been due to the fact that these ships doubled as a salvage/capture vessel, having a crew compartment on the underside of the cockpit that took up internal space that could have been devoted to weapon components. Although this capacity was never observed by the Kushan during the Exodus back to Hiigara, it is clear from Somtaaw reports during the Beast War that they did, in fact, act as salvagers and had other enhanced abilities.
This upgraded version of the Thief corvette made an appearance at the beginning of the Beast War, during which the Hiigaran Kiith Somtaaw discovered, released, and hunted down the Beast infection. The major improvement the new Thief corvettes had over older models is the ability to project a holographic image around the hull and send out false sensor readings so that they could effectively fool an enemy into thinking these corvettes were friendly ships, enemy ships of much greater size and power, or even harmless asteroids. This ruse, like cloaking technology, could be overcome by proximity sensors, but commanders typically do not employ these sensors when there are no anomalous readings indicative of cloaking. While the Somtaaw were able to quickly adapt the technology to their own purposes, no other known race had ever displayed this form of technology, leading experts to believe it is purely Turanic in origin. This casts doubt on the common stereotype that the Turanic Raiders acquired new technology through theft alone.
Overview[]
Standard corvettes are the first A.I faction-only ships encountered. They first appear on mission 2, and fulfill roles similar to those of Light Corvettes or Heavy Corvettes. However, they appear in such scant numbers that they don't pose much of a threat to the Mothership, though they can still shoot down individual Strike Craft. They appear in greater numbers on mission 4, however.
Standard corvettes are almost strictly inferior to heavy corvettes. Their speed is barely faster, but they have barely more than a third of the heavy corvettes' durability and firepower. While they may be useful in earlier missions when funds are tight and opposition is lighter, they are best replaced by stronger or more specialized corvettes in later missions.
Standard corvettes move much more quickly in Homeworld than in Homeworld Remastered. This makes them nearly impossible to capture by Salvage Corvettes, though players with dedicated micromanagement skills can order their salvage corvettes to kamikaze for the speed boost before changing the order to capture at the last moment. In Homeworld Remastered, standard corvettes move much more slowly and can be captured by simply right clicking on them with salvage corvettes.
Trivia[]
- The manual for Homeworld: Cataclysm states the ship is called a "Thief-class Corvette".[1]
