This is the article on the ship from Homeworld. For similar ships in other games, see Scout. |
The Scout was a cheap and fast fighter, used primarily for reconnaissance by the Kushan and Taiidan Empire in Homeworld.
Overview[]
Scouts are designed primarily to be used as a form of fast probe, able to be sent into unknown territories and report on what they find. As a result, they have extremely weak armor and can die quickly to any other ship, but are good for being able to harass an enemy while waiting for bigger and more powerful vessels to arrive on the scene.
Since they are such a basic fighter, Scouts are available from the very first mission in the campaign, as well as being the only combat ship that can be built at the outset in multiplayer. As with other strike craft, they are very agile and are quickly constructed, as well as having the fastest movement speed than any other ship type. However, that speed results in a significant reduction in their weapon strength and are generally outclassed by all other strike craft.
Scouts have a special ability known as "Speed Burst". Activating this greatly increases their speed temporarily, which makes it an ideal benefit to reveal enemies hiding out in unusual locations on the map.
Lore[]
Despite being a ship that tends not to be used often by the player in the campaign, they continued to play a key role in fleets even after the conclusion of the Homeworld War, with most kiith making use of such reconnaissance vessels in some form. By the time of the Vaygr War, scouts were upgraded to include the ability to ping themselves on the Sensors Manager, as well as EMP bursts.
Trivia[]
- In the Homeworld: Cataclysm manual, the Kushan ship is codenamed Arrow and the Taiidan ship is codenamed Fiirkan.[1]
- A prototype version of the "Light Interceptor" (as the ship is named in the game files) had an engine fairing on the starboard side, which was eventually discarded.
