The Repair Corvette was a non-Combat Ship to repair friendly ships used by the Kushan and Taiidan Empire in Homeworld.
Overview[]
Like salvage corvettes, repair corvettes are utility vessels designed to provide a portable method of healing ships in the fleet. While not as durable as their frigate counterparts, developed later in the Homeworld War, repair corvettes are invaluable tools for a fledgling fleet, as they are cheap to produce and can heal strike craft relatively easily, albeit at a slower rate. However, their repair beams are not very strong and they can easily succumb to the weapons of any hostile craft.
Lore[]
The Repair Corvette evolved from early maintenance shuttles used during the construction of the Kushan Mothership. These earlier craft were designed with the purpose of repairing and refuelling new vessels built for the emerging fleet, often taking part in the rescue and recovery of pilots and crewmen in the event of emergencies. Eventually the old shuttle design would become the de facto repairing corvette of the fleet, with a few modifications including a small docking bay on its underside as well as a projectile cannon turret. These features would serve to make them critically important field assets to the fleet in the event of combat situations, able to service fighters, corvettes, and warships in the midst of an attack.
The ship, used to repair strike craft and Capital Ships alike, would serve combat duty throughout the entire Homeworld War. Newly equipped with a reversed version of the phased disassembler array, it literally breaks down damaged material and restructures it. As such it can repair enemy ships low of cost. This takes a very long time but is worth the effort and can be used effectively to repair other corvettes as well as capital ships while fighters line up to dock with it. Their role would eventually be supplanted by Support Frigates with their much more powerful beams and more numerous docking bays, but the repair corvette proved its worth as a highly mobile asset that when produced in large numbers enabled their fellow Kushan warriors a fighting chance.
Legacy[]
Once the Kushan were able to create the Support Frigate, the Repair Corvette was sidelined and eventually fell out of use by the end of the Homeworld War. Kiith either continued to use the trusty Support Frigate or were combining the healing ability into Workers. By the time of the Vaygr War, repair corvettes were no longer necessary as the Resource Collector was able to repair ships all by itself, in tandem with its resourcing capabilities.
Trivia[]
- In the Homeworld: Cataclysm manual, the Kushan ship is codenamed Mercy: the codename for the Taiidan equivalent is unknown and is one of the few ships not to have such a codename given.[1]
- In the original Homeworld, the repair corvette was able to refuel strike craft by them docking on the docking pad. This process was slow because only one ship could dock at a time. The ability for strike craft to dock with repair corvettes is removed in Homeworld Remastered because the fuelling mechanic was similarly removed from the game.
