The Seeker-class Reconnaissance Fighter or Recon is the Kiith Somtaaw scout. Its high speed and advanced sensors make it live up to its name.
Background[]
Kiith Somtaaw's mining mission required quickly finding the rarest and most valuable minerals possible and harvesting them before anyone else could. To that end, they purchased the rights to the Heavy Neutrino scanning array from Kiith S'Jet to scan for minerals and radiation signatures. Though the scanning array was usually placed on research platforms or Frigate-size ships, the need to rapidly scan entire systems at close range needed a different approach. To that end, Somtaaw engineers took the scanning array and basically built a fighter around it, resulting in a ship with the attributes of a small fighter but the sensor capabilities of a ship 20-30 times the size and expense.
The original Seeker prototype was unarmed, but encounters with Turanic Raiders convinced engineers to jury-rig a light mass driver onto the belly mount and add the ability to track other ships.
As an aside, because recon patrol means spending long periods of time in a small cockpit, many recon pilots are short single young women. Deep Recon patrols are thus jokingly referred to as "Heartbreak Patrols", though whether that refers to the risk of broken relationships or how these pilots... "make up" for lost time upon their return is not known.
Function[]
It is equipped with a single gun on the underbelly for emergencies (A mass driver that can be upgraded into an energy cannon) but is generally unsuitable for combat. However, its sensors rival that of a probe and can function in nebulas and, with the proper upgrade, reveal stealthed or mimicked ships. It also has very high speed and unlike a probe, is not a one-shot move unit.
Recons are best used for scout duty: Finding out enemy locations then quickly retreating, or staying put to keep an eye on them until risk of destruction comes. Keeping them near other vessels to protect them from stealth/camo attacks is also a choice. Due to their speed, they make an excellent choice for finding and destroying Proximity Sensors and opening up an area for Mimics and Leeches to infiltrate.
The Beast also has its own version of this ship.
Trivia[]
- In the Homeworld: Cataclysm manual, the ship is referred to as the Seeker-class Reconnaissance Fighter.[1]
- It should not be confused with the similarly named Seeker-class Probe which also shares similar roles.
