This is the article on the ship used in Homeworld and Homeworld: Cataclysm. For the probe device of the same role in Homeworld 2, see Proximity Sensor Probe. |
The Proximity Sensor was a non-Combat Ship designed for detecting cloaked ships used by the Kushan and Taiidan Empire in Homeworld.
Overview[]
Proximity Sensors, as the name would suggest, are a device used to detect enemy ships that get too near them. However, they also have the capacity of detecting ships using a Cloak Generator to hide themselves from typical sensors view, nullifying surprise attacks from enemies that involve a cloaking field. Unfortunately, this ability means that cloaked ships will always target proximity sensors so they can't be seen by their enemy.
Despite being primarily designed for detecting cloaked ships, they can be used as a probe device. Indeed, once they are available after completing the necessary research, probes are worthless because the proximity sensor provides the same functionality as a probe with a reusuable engine.
Proximity Sensors have continued to be used long after the conclusion of the Homeworld War, with large walls of them used to defend planets such as Hiigara and Gozan IV during the Beast War. By the time of the Vaygr War, reusuable engines had fallen out of favour, and the Proximity Sensor became a probe device with a single use engine that largely reduced its effectiveness from previous years.
