This is the article on the probe in Homeworld 2. For other similar Probes, see Probe. |
The Probe is a non-Combat Ship utility vessel designed to investigate areas of space used by the Hiigarans and Vaygr in Homeworld 2.
Background[]
The Probe is a small torpedo like device, cheap in construction and easy to build. Probes are poorly armored and have no defensive capabilities, so they can easily be destroyed by any type of enemy strike craft or frigate. Probes have very advanced sensors, useful for scouting out areas or discreetly spying on enemy positions, a major advantage to any Commander who wants to know his enemy.
Probes have little armor and no defense, making them vulnerable to enemy attacks, so it is important to position probes out of the enemy sensory range, or away from tactical units. Probes have a one shot movement, meaning that they can only be moved once.
Trivia[]
- Apart from Mission 08 in the single-player campaign, this ship has no functional usefulness and should generally not be built, as it is rarely necessary to scout out enemy positions and most missions place the player in a combat situation from the start. However, the Vaygr will regularly employ the use of this ship in missions, almost always because of scripting reasons to ensure that the player is detected and to trigger attacks.
- Despite the relative uselessness of this ship in the single-player campaign, it is slightly more functional in multiplayer, since the use of this ship makes it easy to spy on enemy opponents. However, since it is a probe, opponents can simply gun them down to prevent spying operations, making a Scout more attractive for such reconnaissance requirements.
- The Hiigaran probe can be repurposed into a Target Drone for training purposes.
