- "We have finally been able to translate the data we downloaded from the alien pod. It was launched from some kind of alien exploration vessel called the Naggarok." — Kiith Somtaaw command
The Naggarok was an alien exploration vessel built by an otherwise completely unknown ancient civilization, vastly predating even the Progenitors. It arrived in the Galaxy just under 1 million years BHL, bringing with it a life form later named The Beast.
Story[]
Background[]
The Naggarok journeyed to the Homeworld galaxy from a neighboring galaxy using an experimental hyperdrive of immense power. By the time the ship emerged from hyperspace, it was carrying a malevolent viral entity which had not been present at the start of its journey.
When the vessel's crew realized this lifeform's assimilating nature, they decided to destroy the vessels' engines and communications array, thus trapping the creature inside. However, the ship launched its emergency beacon with a small sample of Beast cells on board. That beacon was found almost one million years later by Kiith Somtaaw.
The infection[]
- "For a million years we have been trapped in this ship, listening to the electromagnetic chatter of your tiny self/worlds. We know you better than you know yourselves. Your enemies came to use us and instead we shall use each other" — The Beast
For one million years, the Beast, despite being trapped, listened to the subspace communications traveling back and forth between the various civilizations. It learned to speak Galactic Common perfectly, and also became aware of the power struggles within the galaxy. So, when the Naggarok was discovered by the Taiidani Imperialists in the Galactic Rim, the Beast had an offer: Repair the ship and help the Beast, and in exchange, they would be given fully half of their galaxy to rule. The Taiidani accepted without a second thought. Kiith Somtaaw later arrived only to engaged the Taiidani forces repairing the Naggarok. Unfortunately for the mining Kiith, the ship managed to escape.
Later on, when Kiith Somtaaw engaged the Imperialists and the Beast at the site of the Nomad Moon, the Naggarok was present. From its safe vantage point near the nomad moon, it directed its own infected forces and launched a few cruise missiles to spread itself around. Later, the Bentusi arrived to provide help by transmitting designs for their Super Acolyte fighter. The Imperialists realized the Beast had decieved them, lying about the Bentusi's defeat and subverting the Nomad Moon for itself. They abandoned the fight, leaving the Beast to its fate. Kiith Somtaaw's forces, aided by the Bentusi's technology, destroyed the Naggarok not long after.
Cut off from its main source of intelligence, the remaining Beast forces were weakened, degenerating into easily defeated mindless entities. With the help of vaccination technology developed by Kiith Somtaaw, uninfected ships were protected from the Beast virus, meaning it could no longer assimilate any new mass. Eventually, almost a decade after the Naggarok's defeat, the Beast was forced into extinction and never rose again.
Technology[]
Weapons[]
Naggarok's Ion Cannon
The Naggarok has three types of weapons: The ion cannons, the Phased Disassembler Array (PDA) and the Cruise Missiles.
Eight ion cannons are belted 360 degrees around the ship. Each of them has a range of nine kilometers, making this the long range weapon of the Naggarok. They are accurate, maneuverable, and particularly lethal to strikecraft.
The forward mounted PDA is more powerful. It breaks down matter to a sub-atomic level for absorption. It can consume a Dreadnought or a smaller ship within seconds. The Naggarok then harvests the matter to construct and launch Cruise Missiles. However, this is very short-ranged and requires the Naggarok to remain stationary.
The Cruise Missile is the most dangerous weapon. It carries the Beast, which can infect and take over a target vessel.
Drives[]
Naggarok using its drive
The Naggarok has an inertialess drive system. Similar that of the Bentusi, it has no visible external thrusters. The drives allows the Naggarok to accelerate almost as fast as a fighter class vessel, fly several times faster than any other known unit, and stop in a moment. When the drives are engaged, the ship's hull seems to be surrounded by a turquoise-blue hue. Although it is extremely fast, it can be halted by EMP attacks from ACVs.
Hyperdrive[]
- "The Naggarok came from outside the galaxy nearly a million years ago. It was using an experimental hyperspace drive of immense power." — Kiith Somtaaw command
The Naggarok is known to have been capable of extra-galactic travel, which requires immensely powerful hyperdrive systems. The only other race in the Homeworld series to have made similarly powerful hyperdrives are the Progenitors, later introduced in Homeworld 2.
Behind the scenes[]
The name Naggarok is most likely a reference to Ragnarök ("Fate of the Gods" or "Doom of the Gods" in Norse), the ultimate battle between the forces of good and evil, followed by the destruction of the world (both the universe and most of the gods) in Norse mythology.
Another possible reference is Naglfar (Old Norse "nail farer"), a boat made entirely from the fingernails and toenails of the dead. During the events of Ragnarök, Naglfar is foretold to bring hordes of monsters that will do battle with the gods.
