Mines are explosive devices placed in space to destroy ships passing by. Mines of different shapes and sizes are used by the various factions in the Homeworld universe. They are commonly used to block off an approach to a strategically important point. A common use of minelayers were used to defend Research Stations in control of the Taiidan Empire; the notable ones were near a large supernova and another used within the Kadiir Nebula.
Mines consist of a large explosive charge, tracking device, friend-or-foe identification device, and a minimal propulsion unit. While they are powerful enough to destroy fighters or corvettes with a single hit, these units are usually too fast for the mines, which excel only in use against larger, slower targets, like frigates and Capital Ships.
