This is the article on the fighter used by the Turanic Raiders. For similarly named ships, see Interceptor. |
The Interceptor was the basic combat fighter used by the Turanic Raiders in Homeworld and Homeworld: Cataclysm.
Background[]
This interceptor had the dubious distinction of being the first hostile vessel encountered by the Exiles on their quest for the Homeworld. As a fighter, the Bandit is not known as the most powerful in the galaxy, yet it has been a thorn in the side of many races. Its primary role is that of an interceptor of fighters and it performs that role adequately but is useful for little else. It is slower than most other races' interceptors and has weaker weaponry but compensates for this by having much stronger armor and over twice the fuel capacity, allowing it to stay in a fight for longer periods of time. Its weapons are similar to the point defense guns found on the Attack Carriers which are weaker in strength to conventional Mass Drivers, but are able to maintain a nearly continuous stream of fire as opposed to the 'bursts' that are fired by the Interceptor used by the Exiles.
Typical Raider tactics involve using Bandits to distract enemy fire while Missile Corvettes move in to deal heavy damage to distracted foes. These ships are also used for ambushes on resource convoys by staying powered down near asteroids until weaponless resource collectors wander by. This tactic has lead many escort fighters to dub the Bandits and their pilots 'Rock Rats'. In summary, the Bandit is an unremarkable design that can rely on only two advantages: superior numbers and durability.
The Beast also has a variant of this ship.
Trivia[]
- In the Homeworld: Cataclysm manual, it is referred to as a Bandit-class Interceptor.[1]
- Homeworld: Cataclysm manual states that Bandits have tendency to lurk in asteroid belts in order to hide from enemy sensors, thus given the nickname “Rock Rats” by Hiigaran crews.
