Homeworld Mobile was a mobile-based massively multiplayer online video-game in the Homeworld series developed by Stratosphere Games and published by Gearbox Publishing. It was available on Google Play for Android and the App Store for iOS.

Set 15 years after the events of Homeworld 2, the story followed the exploits of the traditional Kiith clans who, dissatisfied with Hiigara's new system of global representation (in which non-Kiithid can gain power), decided to leave the Homeworld and venture into the uncharted Nimbus Galaxy in search of a new destiny and purpose. Aside from a brand new story, Homeworld Mobile set out to answer several unanswered questions from the Homeworld 2 story related to the Progenitors and the Vaygr.

History[]

Homeworld Mobile was announced at the same time as the development of Homeworld 3. A regional open beta of the game was released to residents of selected countries (Android) and backers of the Homeworld 3 Fig campaign (iOS) between 22 July 2021 - 12 September 2022. The public "pre-play" phase of the game started on 27 September 2022 for previous testers and residents of several new countries, followed by the global release on 11 October 2022.

The game initially received negative reviews on launch, citing its heavy reliance on micro-transactions and the excessive grinding required to build up units in the later game, which would then risk being destroyed by enemy forces. Even so, it built a strong community of players over time and many weekly challenges involving the unique races of the game were spawned, which improved the game's reputation over time.

However, in the end Homeworld Mobile was unable to reach the acclaim or following of its PC game counterparts. On 30th May 2024 Stratosphere Games announced that development of the game had ceased, and on 29th July 2024 the game was shut down. Many mysteries from Homeworld 2 such as the origin and fate of the Progenitors and the Vaygr acquisition of the Planet Killers will thus likely forever remain unanswered.

JOURNEY TO SETTLE AN UNEXPLORED GALAXY

A REAL-TIME STRATEGY MMO LIKE NEVER BEFORE ON MOBILE

Embark upon a journey to settle an unexplored galaxy in this adventure that will require every bit of your wit. Acquire resources, engage threatening enemies, forge delicate pacts, and lead your fleet in this Homeworld odyssey.

Recruit officers, upgrade your fleet, and experience true real time strategy in 3D like never before on mobile.

Over a century since the original exodus and rediscovery of their Homeworld, the Hiigaran people have overcome trials and galactic foes to finally bring forth an era of peace and prosperity. The Hiigarans now look beyond their galaxy to explore and settle an uncharted universe through the Hyperspace Gates.

Choose from among the Kiithid factions in the Hiigaran Navy as you embark upon missions to explore the outer reaches of the universe in search of resources and new friends or old foes. Compete against or form alliances with fellow settlers from different factions as you chase the trail of the Progenitors. Will you search for archaic clues as a researcher of the S'jet, bring glory and prove your might as a proud member of the Soban, or befriend residents of the new universe as the carefree Manaan?

Engage upon truly dynamic real-time strategy and combat as you control spaceship carriers, interceptors, and destroyers to outmaneuver opponents and employ tactics to gain the upper hand.

Fundamental Gameplay Principles[]

  • You are the commander of a small exploration fleet sent out to explore the Nimbus Galaxy. Your fleet is comprised of one Flagship and an assortment of Squadrons and Escorts.
  • Your Flagship functions similarly to the Carrier from Homeworld 2, i.e. a mobile construction facility of smaller combat and utility craft and a resource dropoff + processing point, but the flexibility has been enhanced in terms of what you can fit on it which you eventually gain more access to as you progress through the missions. Your initial Flagship, an Expedition Ship, is fairly limited in capability but you will eventually unlock larger, more powerful models for construction.
  • Your Flagship is also escorted by a small fleet comprised of Squadrons and Escorts, set up in a slot configuration. Squadrons are the smaller and more numerous ships like Interceptors, Bombers, corvettes and Resource Collectors; your initial Expedition ship starts with 3 Squadron slots. Escorts are larger vessels akin to Frigates, and your first Expedition Ship has 1 Escort Slot. Larger Flagships with more Escort slots can use 2 to fit a Destroyer.
  • Your Flagship can store more support ships than it can deploy. As long as the ship of a particular slot is Docked and not Launched it can be swapped at any time for an equivalent size ship/squad, even while you are in the middle of combat (or filling the slot of a ship that was just destroyed).
  • Later in gameplay within chapter 12 you gain access to editing the External modules of your Flagship which consists of small and medium Turrets, Hangars, Sensors and Engines, making your Flagship more capable in every area.
  • Ships, equipment, Star Systems and resources have Tiers, the first two also have Grades.
    • The Tier is represented by a Roman numeral at the top right of its image in the menus, with five levels of 0, I, II, III and IV. The higher the number the stronger the item. Star systems also have such a Tier, not only representing how strong your engines need to be to reach them but also shows the tier of resources that can be mined and of the enemy ships you'll encounter in the area
    • For ships and equipment, the Grade is represented by the background color of the item in its image and Tier number. A darker (royal) blue is Common, a lighter cyan blue is Uncommon, Green is Rare, Purple is Epic and Gold is Legendary. The higher the grade, the stronger the item
  • Within chapter 15 of the missions you unlock access to Research
  • Gameplay consists of 4 main phases. Station Work, Scanning, Travel and Combat
  • For Station Work, every System in the Nimbus Galaxy has a Trade Station and they vary in their capabilities. Your fleet is safe while at a Trade Station, and at a Station is where you can start all Fabrication, Refining and Research jobs, edit/upgrade your External Modules and access the Market.
    • For Fabrication you'll need various resources and a Blueprint of the item/ship you want to make. Some blueprints can be used infinitely, others are a single-time use (typically for a stronger variant of the item in question). Note, while Modules and Squadrons can be fabricated at any trade station, ships of an Escort size or larger must be fabricated at a specialized station with a Shipyard (and previewing them on the map will show their facilities).
  • Scanning consists of going to the System map and running your Scanner. This will try to locate Unknown Signals, and repeated scans can eventually identify them as one of a variety of Combat sites. You cannot go anywhere in a system to do anything unless it is a fully identified site from scanning.
  • Travel consists of both flying to or from a fully identified site within a System and travelling between Systems (which always lands you at the destination system's Trade Station by default). Note that each System has a hyperspace range difficulty; if your Flagship's engine strength is not at least as much as this range difficulty you will not be allowed to travel to the system, so when you get access to External modules make sure to upgrade your engines. Higher range systems have more valuable resources and loot from sites, but all NPC enemy ships encountered are more powerful; even if you can reach a higher system make sure your fleet is strong enough to handle the combat.
  • The Combat phase is for anything you do within a Site, and this can be a wide variety of tasks including mining at an Asteroid site (where you will be periodically attacked by NPCs). Mission-combat sites are unique to yourself, but Asteroid sites are shared between players and you can often find other players mining within the same site (and going next to each other could make dealing with NPC attacks easier as you combine your forces). Asteroid sites can be left at any time, but any other site has a distinct goal:
    • Relic sites require you to use a Resource Collector to gather a Relic object from the site. You win the mission and can leave with the rewards the instant the relic is brought back to your Flagship, even if you're in the middle of combat
    • Pure combat sites require you to face several waves of enemy ships of a particular faction. You win when they are all destroyed. These sites will also typically have at least a couple of abandoned Freight Containers that can be collected by a Resource Collector and opened for a variety of rewards
    • Unique Mission sites are scattered throughout the mission Chapters and can have multiple unique goals to overcome, such as defending two spread-out sensor relays from attack simultaneously or destroying an array of pirate defense turrets from long range to avoid their main firepower.
  • Weapons base their damage output around three core things: Hull Damage, Armor Damage and Firing Rate
    • Hull is the main health of any ship. If this reaches 0, the ship dies. This cannot permanently happen to your Flagship, it will merely be disabled and sent back to the nearest Trade Station, but any other Squadron or Escort ship with you will be destroyed permanently. Certain weapons such as Missiles have very good Hull damage.
    • Armor is only present on larger ships such as Resource Controllers, Escorts and your Flagship. This acts like a non-regenerating shield of sorts; a ship will take zero Hull damage until its Armor layer has been cleared, and weapons that usually fare very well against Hull (like Missiles) do very poorly against Armor, so you'll need some higher caliber weapons or Plasma Bomber squadrons to quickly get through the armor first.
    • Firing Rate determines how fast a weapon fires and therefore if it can handle squadrons of small fighters well. The damage ratings you see on ships and weapons are DPS values; something like an Ion Cannon can have a respectable DPS rate but it fires infrequent-but-high-damage bursts. Such slow-firing weapons fare very poorly against fighter squadrons but typically do very well against ships of Escort size or larger, while rapid-fire weapons typically have the opposite issue.
    • The Hull and Armor of all of your ships is fully restored whenever you switch Sites (or return to a Trade Station). The Hull and Armor of Squadrons can also be fully restored at a Site by docking them with your Flagship (which you can then immediately re-launch at full strength), and Resource Collectors are able to slowly perform repairs on larger ships (WARNING, doing this frequently makes NPCs consider them a higher value target and will start firing on the Collector).
