The Field Frigate is a Non-Combat Ship used to defend Taiidan ships from attacks.

Background

The Field Frigate is the most unique and extraordinary aspect of Taiidan technology to put out in years. Inspired by the success of the Defense Fighter the Tiifal uses the frigate hull and power plant to support a revolutionary Defense Field, far more advanced than the Koshiir-Ra’s defense laser.

The defense field is based on electromagnetic waves emitted from a generator in the bow of the ship. The defense field, which has a limited usage time must be recharged after running out of power. The EM field is strong but not strong enough to repel ion cannon. In addition, slow-moving ammunition like mines or missiles are also not repelled. Even so, the Tiifal is truly the most effective protection against strike craft attacks, despite its expense.

Tiifal are also used to take down enemy carriers or motherships, leading the assault fleet to the target and then protecting them from the carrier's main guns which, with the exception of the Attack Carrier's ion cannons, are unable to penetrate the Tiifal shield.

Overview

While they seem like they are a good investment, they have severe weaknesses. For one, they cost about 800 RUs as they are a special frigate ship. Their armor is also very weak so a few capital ships with Ion Cannons will take one out quickly. Only two may be built.

In Homeworld Cataclysm multiplayer, they are the only ship a beast player can build in defending itself against Kith Somtaaw's dreaded siege cannon. The EM field can weaken the cannon shot's blast and detonate the shot prematurely. However this ship often gets destroyed after taking a shot from the siege cannon, even with armor upgrades.

Trivia

• The Taiidan never uses this ship in the Homeworld single player campaign, nor does it use the Fighter version. However, in Cataclysm, this ship sees more usage from both the Taiidan Imperialists and the Beast.
• In the Homeworld: Cataclysm manual, it is referred to as a Tiifal-class Defense Field Frigate.
