Khar-Toba is the thirteenth and final mission in the Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak campaign and finds the Coalition and Gaalsien fleets clashing at the wreck of the Khar-Toba.

Overview[]

The Kapisi arrives at the wreck of the Khar-Toba, barely ahead of the Gaalsien fleets. Use Baserunners to deploy scanners around the wreck of Khar-Toba, which will allow Rachel to fire the Ion Cannon Satellite at targets on the battlefield. During the mission, the Gaalsien carrier Ashinta arrives on scene. Once it's been dispatched, the Gaalsien Flagship arrives for a final confrontation.

Objectives[]

  • Get Rachel S'Jet to the Khar-Toba
  • Deploy 3 Scanners
  • Destroy the Ashinta
  • Destroy the Gaalsien Flagship

Research[]

  • Narrow-beam Ion Cannon shot (automatic)

Strategy[]

Initially you start the mission with only Rachel, and all your resources. The Khar-Toba is slightly south of the center of the map, and several breakable shipwrecks are scattered around it. The game progresses and heavy combat starts once Rachel approaches close enough to the Khar-Toba, which is roughly the same distance as the closest shipwreck south of it. As long as you don't get that close you can move Rachel around the entire map uncontested, even Shipbreaking every wreck if you wish. Note, however, your main force will arrive from the center-south and combat will be heavy enough that you're unlikely to have time to grab every resource wreck; being the final battle you shouldn't have much need of it regardless.

Once Rachel has approached close enough and given the iconic video, your main force arrives. Use Baserunners to deploy scanners at the three marked locations. Once the scan completes you'll have to defeat the Ashinta carrier and then the flagship, and you'll have access to the orbital Ion Cannon turret through Rachel as an ability.

CLASSIC MODE TIPS: This fight will be intense, and is most definitely the final battle.

Not only are you going to be vastly outnumbered, the enemy even sends airstrikes against the scanner beacons in the initial combat phase. All three have to be active long enough to complete the scan.

Once the scan is completed, the Ashinta arrives with a sizeable force and multiple additional squads will start arriving from the edges of the map in multiple directions. The Ashinta is very aggressive; she will charge straight at the Kapisi with her entire force in tow.

Remember, this is the final battle. While in previous missions you should have been preserving and collecting as many resources as possible, that no longer applies here. Use EVERYTHING, and instantly rebuild anything lost. If you don't have at least 20000 CU and 2000 RU saved up by the time you start this mission you will have serious problems.

One of your greatest issues will be enemy Siege Cruisers. They can inflict serious damage to your Battlecruisers and Assault Cruisers while you're dealing with the smaller units that rush forwards, and the sheer number of Heavy Railguns that get thrown at you will be a problem as well. Use every long range strike from the Kapisi possible; airstrikes, cruise missiles, bombers, etc.; and the Ion Turret via Rachel. The widespread beam configuration will be your best option for hitting all of the smaller forces. When the Ashinta gets close hammer it down fast.

When the Hand of Sajuuk shows up, this is it. Don't even bother caring about resources anymore. Send EVERYTHING, including the Kapisi, straight at it. When you're getting somewhat close, hit the area around it with a wide Ion Satellite shot, Cruise Missile, or both, to clear many of its defenders, then focus every weapon you have on it. You win the instant it is destroyed.

Trivia[]

  • The first two in-game cutscenes, of Rachel's Baserunner cresting the dune and of Rachel's Baserunner closing on the Khar-Toba, closely parallel the original animatics from Homeworld 1.
  • After deploying the scanners, the revealed map of Khar-Toba shows the city to be in the shape of the traditional Hiigaran "Angel Moon" logo.
