This is the article on the ship used by Kiith Somtaaw. For other similar ships, see Carrier. |
The Carrier was a non-combat Super Capital Ship designed to expand fleet size and provide mobile construction facilities. It was only used by Kiith Somtaaw in Homeworld: Cataclysm.
Background[]
Shamans were designed before times of battle as support for Somtaaw command ships. They were based on the Chieftain Processor Unit, with the final design simply upgrading the Processor's power plant into a military-class drive system and a PDS construction bay. While these huge units were moving forward, Carriers were normally assigned to stay with several Workers to finish the mining of remaining asteroids. Its production bays were merely for constructing acolytes and recons, and its frigate bay was simply for Worker maintenance. However, when times of war began, the Shamans were forced onto the battlefield, their construction facilities being upgraded into full military production ability. Thanks to their durable design and their Sentinel escorts, they could survive an attack from multiple frigates, and were capable of striking back with Energy Cannons if upgraded for battle. Their four smaller turrets won't do much against capital ships but can definitely assist against Strike Craft. Like most carriers, they could build both strike craft and frigates. Its primary docking bay could survive several direct hits from Ion Cannons, and with a Sentinel force field it could allow strike craft and even frigates to safely retreat from battle and dock inside for repair and resupply before going back to the fray. It also possesses two resource dropoff pads for Workers and a Crystal Processing Beam.
Compared to the Beast Carrier, however, it is unfortunately outclassed in every known way. An infected Carrier does not need to build support modules, with all of its potential support is instantly available the moment it is built. It also includes a Beast Infect Weapon, which dramatically increases its lethality in combat. Also, the Beast Carrier requires less RUs and time to build and despite the techno-organic layering, is still faster moving. Still, the Shaman is a vital addition to any Somtaaw fleet.
This is the only Kiith Somtaaw unit that can be built with a restriction on quantity, similar to Homeworld. Only two ships can be built. As each ship contains space for six additional Support Modules, the total increase in modules will be 12, and assuming that the command ship builds its own 12, it brings the fleet to its maximum of 444 support units.
