This is the article on the ship in Homeworld 2. For for similar vessels in other games, see Bomber. |
The Bomber was an anti-Capital Ship fighter used by the Hiigarans and Vaygr during the Vaygr War in Homeworld 2.
The Hiigaran bomber is known as the Anvil Class.
Overview[]
Bombers, like interceptors, are constructed in squads: the Hiigarans build squads of five, with the Vaygr opting to build a squad of six. Unlike interceptors, they pack a heavier punch than any other ship in the fleet, purely because of the strength of the Plasma Bomb launchers attached to the vessel, which makes them the perfect ship to deal with enemy hoards of capital ships.
Bombers are armed with heavy plasma bombs that will work best against both capital ships, as well as Super Capital Ships. When sending bombers into battle, give them 3-5 interceptor escort squads, as bombers will be the primary target of all fighter-class ships for the enemies' fighters and corvettes. Another very good option for an anti-fighter escort is the Gunship corvette which Vagyr fighters do not do well against. Use bombers wisely, and don't give away the fact that there's cover around.
One of the most potent uses for bombers is in the removal of subsystems from enemy ships. Once their bombs have been upgraded, a few flights of bombers can easily destroy/disable an enemy subsystem in a single pass. This usage for bombers may seem fairly obvious, but it is especially important for Hiigaran commanders to understand and utilize this unique capability of the upgraded bomber since Vaygr capital ships are especially vulnerable to this kind of disruption. In particular, Vaygr Battlecruisers are rendered practically impotent if their engines and Heavy Missile Launchers are rendered inoperable for they lose their two most useful weapons: their missile volleys and the ability to bring the Trinity Cannon to bear. Without these weapons a Vaygr Battlecruiser is not much more than a heavily armored and extremely expensive strike craft dock.
Elite Bombers[]
In the second mission of the single-player campaign of Homeworld 2, it is possible to acquire Elite Bombers. These ships, which cannot be constructed by the player, are simply an upgraded version of the traditional bomber, sporting stronger armor, faster engine speeds and more powerful plasma bombs. To acquire these powerful fighters, the player must have already met the minimum crew requirements by having docked 4 Hiigaran Crew Transports with the Pride of Hiigara as part of the mission requirements: after that, the fifth crew transport to dock will provide these vessels without any resources being consumed.
As these ships are unable to be constructed by the player, if the squadron is destroyed, they will be unrecoverable. However, despite being unconstructable, should the player dock them with a construction vessel, any ships that are missing from the squadron will be replaced for free.
Trivia[]
- 15 years after the Vaygr War, the Anvil Class was replaced by the new Havoc Class which are heavily simplified versions of the Anvil.
- The Hiigaran Bomber, the Anvil-class, should not be confused with the similarly named but more planet-bound Anvil-class Tactical Bomber also used by Hiigara's predecessors on Kharak.
