This is the article on the ship from Homeworld and Emergence. For the ship in the Vagyr fleet, see Assault Frigate. For other uses, see Assault Frigate |
The Assault Frigate was an anti-Strike Craft capital ship of the Kushan and Taiidan Empire in Homeworld.
Overview[]
Assault frigates are general purpose capital ships, able to attack ships as small as corvettes with a reasonable degree of accuracy, while packing a solid punch against larger ships. They are also quite durable, and are still nimble enough to outrun larger ships though they lag behind strike craft and corvettes. Assault frigates lack the precision to quickly destroy smaller strike craft, making attack bombers a considerable threat. They are also too large and slow to evade most attacks, including ion cannons and mines.
Like other capital ships, assault frigates can short jump, largely eliminating their weakness of their relatively slow speed at the cost of some RUs per jump.
Both Taiidani and Kushan assault frigates have all their guns located at the bow, allowing them to aggressively shower their targets with the entirety of their arsenal. However, the location of their weapons also makes them nearly defenceless when attacked from the rear, sides or from vertical axes.
Lore[]
Assault Frigates were the workhorse capital ships of the fleet. Able to fend off fighters, corvettes and even sometimes frigates, these ships were always present in places belonging to each respective empire. In the case of the Taiidan Empire, they often were used as a form of law-enforcement, patrolling everywhere owned and controlled by the Emperor.
These ships are encountered for the first time in Mission 03 of the single-player campaign. The initial objective is to capture one of them, in order to interrogate the crew aboard the vessel. Once captured, the player can research Capital Ship Chassis in order to build their own. They are then found in the majority of missions where the Taiidan are present.
Legacy[]
After the conclusion of the Homeworld War, both the Kushan and the splintered factions of the original Taiidan Empire continued to use these ships, although they became known as "standard frigates", due to their commonality throughout the galaxy. By the time of the Vaygr War, the Hiigarans had replaced them with Flak Frigates, although the Vaygr persisted with the original name when sweeping the galaxy.
Trivia[]
- In the Homeworld: Cataclysm manual, the Kushan ship is codenamed Vengeance and the Taiidan ship is codenamed Kudaark.[1]
- The codename Kudaark was given by Fleet Intelligence after a desert burrower that was found on Kharak.[citation needed]
